You are here :     About My Mentor

My Mentor is developed by Maureen Frank of Emberin.

Maureen Frank  is a woman of many talents. An entrepreneur, celebrated author, business strategist, professional speaker and facilitator. She sits on a number of Boards and regularly speaks at Australian and International conferences and events. In addition to all this, Maureen is a single mother to seven year old twin girls.

A qualified solicitor with a corporate legal background, Maureen decided early on in her career that she was not cut out to be a lawyer. Maureen was determined to succeed in business without studying an MBA and set herself a plan and strategy that worked – including heading a company in London at the age of 26.

Maureen was the National Head of Aon’s Mergers and Acquisitions team, a division she started from scratch in 2001. Within three years, she built the department to the largest producer of new revenue for Aon, having cracked the hardnosed private equity (now worth $6 billion) and investment banking worlds in Australia.

Maureen has received public acknowledgement for her business skills, winning a Telstra Business Woman of Year Award in 2004, named a BRW ‘Rising Star’ in 2005 and noted as a finalist in the 2005 Australian Institute of Management Excellence Awards. In 2005, Maureen released her first book, You Go Girlfriend , aimed at inspiring women to believe that they can achieve anything in the business world – even when there are major obstacles. A woman of intelligence, humour and style, she is an acclaimed and inspirational speaker who adds warmth, fun and sparkle to any event with her heartfelt stories. She combines this fresh approach with a mix of ‘no nonsense’ and practical business tips during her speaking engagements and workshops.Diversity Council of Australia

Maureen left the corporate world to start her own company, Emberin, which is devoted to ‘stoking’ the embers inside women to awaken the under utilised potential within. Focusing on providing women with the practical skills they need to make it to the top, Maureen has developed a DVD and CD series to help women take charge of their careers called My Mentor: Challenging Women to Step Up. Maureen is also lead advisor on women’s issues to the Diversity Council of Australia.

Emberin is an organization that focuses on creating more successful and less stressful lives for women. One of the key components of our plan is to also assist employers with their strategies in making workplaces better places for women to work.

The global issue that we are focused on is that we just do not have enough women in senior management positions in our major companies. Indeed, Australia has some of the worst statistic in the Western world with only 8.6% of board positions in the top 200 ASX and women accounted for only 12% of all executive managerial positions in the top 200 ASX companies in 2006 (Australian Bureau of Statistics.) Yet for those of us who are 15 and over – 57% of us work and 72.3% of men work (2006 ABS). The other shocking statistic is that the gender pay gap is still alive and well. As at November 2006, women’s average weekly earnings ($941) were 84% of men’s average weekly earnings ($1,125). This represents a gender earnings gap of 16%.
