The Australian Logistics Council(ALC) is the national umbrella body for Australia’s Transport and Logistics (T&L) Freight Industry.
The ALC is a partnership of senior industry leaders including customers, transport providers, peak bodies, State-based Freight Councils, government officials, academics, unions and other industry specialists with the aim of advocating on behalf of the T&L Freight industry.
Principles
Membership
· Provide leadership to the freight logistics industry by encouraging industry collaboration on areas of national mutual interest.
· Advise Governments on logistics issues as well as wider advocacy on behalf of industry.
· Promote the freight logistics industry’s image and profile and encourage greater recognition by governments and the community of the importance of the industry’s contribution to Australia’s economy.
· Drive implementation of strategies to improve Australia’s domestic and international supply chains.
· Promote effective and efficient supply chains in Australia through regulatory reform and appropriate infrastructure investment, including by maximising the use of our existing supply chains.
· Promote the adoption and development of safety best practices in T&L.
Members are drawn from logistics customers, providers, industry peak bodies and associations, the state freight councils, governments, regulators, unions, universities and other senior industry specialists.
· The ALC currently has around 80 members. Members commit to actively participating in ALC events and Council meetings as well as in the development of ALC policies and projects supporting Australia’s T&L industry.
· Members are also asked to financially contribute to the ALC by becoming our corporate partners.
Engagement
The ALC is committed to engaging directly with membership and the broader T&L industry in the development of policy, priorities and projects.The consultative process ensures the ALC is inclusive and the views of members and the wider industry are properly reflected in the policies and positions advocated by the ALC.
· The ALC Board sets the direction for the ALC and meets monthly, usually by teleconference, to ensure the ALC is meeting its objectives. and Working Groups consist of ALC members joined by other industry experts from the wider T&L community. These groups are usually chaired by a member of the ALC Board.
· ALC Steering Groups
· ALC Steering Groups provide governance and direction for specific programs and their chairmen report to the ALC Board on progress. ALC Working Groups are convened on an as needed basis to work with steering groups on specific projects.
· These groups are supported by ALC staff and external consultants to deliver projects and policy for the ALC.

· In addition ALC members meet three times a year to advance the ALC agenda, with one Annual Forum and two Council Meetings.
· The ALC also convenes issue specific National T&L Industry Summits to facilitate industry discussion and decisions on selected major issues that are current. In 2008 the ALC will hold three summits, Energy & Environment, Innovation & Technology and Safety T&L Vision Zero.
Communication
The ALC is committed to ensuring our advocacy on behalf of the T&L industry;
· Adds value to the public debate on national strategic issues by advocating whole of supply chain and intermodal policy positions;
· Supports the views of our member organisations. Where an issue relates to a particular aspect of the supply chain the ALC will defer to the appropriate peak body. Comment would be considered in a supporting capacity;
· Promotes real and recognisable improvements for our industry, including public understanding of the importance of the T&L Freight Industry;
· Reflects the Principles set out in this document; and
· Is informed by the policies and positions developed by our industry engagement processes.
· Provide a unified voice on nationally strategic issues critical to Australia’s domestic and international freight supply chains.Membership of ALC is by invitation and is extended to Chairmen and CEOs of major organisations with an interest in Australia’s domestic and international logistics supply chains.
